London Grid for Learning Active Lens
This Application was shown to us in a University based History session. It is an augmented reality based app usable with Android or Ipad, it has to be used with specialised worksheets and when pointed at certain parts of the sheets you can get 3d images, sound clips and extra text. This application gives an obvious 'wow' factor for children and makes learning come to life, however there are some drawbacks to the app; one is that you need to have Ipads or tablets available to use in the classroom, also the language on the audio clips could be hard to access for some learners, lastly their is a danger of children getting carried away with the novelty of the app and not focusing on their learning.
GarageBand
GarageBand is an app that can be used to create music on Ipad, PC and android, you can add different layers of sound including percussion, piano, guitar and violin. We used this app within a University based Music session and it was a very useful tool. However I feel that even as an adult who can read music and play an instrument I found the app difficult to use and would be hesitant to use it in a classroom.
Digi maps
Digi maps is a really useful app to use for any geography or local history topic, you can access ordinance survey maps and historical maps for most areas of the UK. The only downside of this app is that you need to subscribe to it to get full access.
